For Immediate Release: October 14, 2025

Kansas City is excited to announce the launch of the Open Doors! Program, formerly known as the Storefront Vacancy Revitalization Program. This initiative is designed to reopen doors of opportunity by transforming vacant spaces into vibrant places.

Open Doors! will connect private property owners with small business owners, artists, and organizations to create engaging pop-up experiences throughout downtown Kansas City. The program is strategically timed to capitalize on the influx of international visitors during the FIFA World Cup 2026, offering a unique opportunity to showcase the city’s entrepreneurial spirit and creative culture.

We invite you to share your vision and be part of this exciting movement as we prepare to welcome the world.

Applications for both groups open on Tuesday, October 14.

Who Can Apply?

1. Private Property Owners
We are seeking property owners with vacant storefronts located in downtown Kansas City, within commercial/business districts, and along the streetcar line. If you're interested in collaborating with entrepreneurs, artists, and local organizations to activate your space during the World Cup, we want to hear from you.

2. Small Business Owners, Artists, and Organizations
We’re looking for established small businesses and artists with retail-ready products and a strong sales history. Participants should be prepared to operate a pop-up storefront at least four days a week during the World Cup. This is a chance to gain international exposure while celebrating Kansas City’s unique identity.

“Open Doors! will enhance our city’s neighborhoods for the World Cup and long after,” said Councilman Wes Rogers. “By incentivizing our property owners and small businesses to revitalize our storefronts, we will build stronger, safer neighborhoods, and in doing so, we will also increase our tax base.”

The Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City (EDCKC) will administer and manage the Open Doors! Program. EDCKC and KC BizCare have previously partnered on successful initiatives like the Back to Business program.

“This program is built for Kansas City makers, artists, and small businesses who are ready to grow,” said Tracey Lewis, President and CEO of EDCKC. “By pairing them with property owners and removing barriers, Open Doors! turns ideas into real storefronts that create jobs and visibility. The goal is simple: give local talent a stage.”
